when EILEEN FISHER presents Caroline Adderson and Barbara Lambert in an event weaving together the love of beautiful fabrics and wonderful words — as two prize-winning authors interlace a reading from their recent work, exploring how the shadows of the past can reach into the present.

TIME: 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 9th.
PLACE: Eileen Fisher, 2721 Granville Street Vancouver – (604-733-5225)

Barbara Lambert carries you off to golden Italy in an archaeological adventure as The Whirling Girl delves into the layered nature of love, and of self-deception, when a young woman’s inheritance whirls her back into memories of a teen-age secret.

Caroline Adderson revisits a 1980’s Vancouver hazy with idealism and counter-culture politics, in her brilliant The Sky is Falling, where the past arrives in a Vancouver home one spring afternoon in 2004, in the form of a newspaper headline that threatens to destabilize a forty-year-old woman’s safe well-ordered life.

Barbara Lambert is a winner of the Danuta Gleed Award for best first collection of short fiction, and the Malahat Review novella prize. Recently chosen a “top Valentines Day Read” by Open Book Toronto, The Whirling Girl has already garnered wide-ranging praise:
“Sexy and Sophisticated, The Whirling Girl is like a fairytale for grownups … ” Annabel Lyon, author of The Sweet Girl and The Golden Mean.
“Brilliant, meaningful prose can be found on each and every page of this fascinating, complex novel…” The Historical Novel Review.
“Lambert’s impressionistic prose is elegant, lush and sensual, offering an authentic taste of a Tuscan summer…” Linda Lappin from Italy, in the online salon Red Room:

Caroline Adderson’s work has received numerous prize nominations including the Sunday Times of London EFG Private Bank Short Story Award, the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, two Commonwealth Writers’ Prizes, the Scotiabank Giller Prize longlist, the Governor General’s Literary Award and the Rogers’ Trust Fiction Prize.
“Nuanced, intelligent and delightfully acerbic, Caroline Adderson is one of the most talented writers in Canada now, and this is her finest novel to date.” Quill & Quire.
“Adderson’s writing isn’t simply deft: she is very very funny …The Sky Is Falling is entertaining and insightful…” The Globe and Mail
“In this funny, deeply thoughtful tale, Adderson shows how one woman manages, given enough luck, time, and Chekhov, to balance life’s pleasures with its paranoia.” The Toronto Star.
